The Holocaust is one of the most horrific periods in history, with millions of lives lost. The story of Oskar Schindler, an immigrant businessman who saved 1000 Jews from death in World War II by employing them in his factory, has long captured the imagination of Americans and people around the world.Schindler's List is not just a movie - it's a complex document that brings this important story to life on film. Made on a budget of $22 million for black-and-white footage and $32 million for color, it took over four years to shoot and required more than 60 sets fashioned around Poland and Czechoslovakia. During the making of this movie many people from the film industry have been interviewed, including screenwriter Steven Zaillian. Besides being a filmmaker, he is also a professor of law at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and the author of five books on criminal law. In addition, he has been a consultant for several other films including "The Squid and the Whale", "Taxi to the Dark Side", and "Lucky You".Zaillian wrote Schindler's List as a response to World War II. The book was published in 1994. According to his website, Zaillian writes about crime and terror in America that frighten people into silence...for money...and power...and profits. He has also won several awards for his work on Schindler's List .During his freshman year of college, Zaillian had the opportunity to visit the concentration camps in Europe. These visits influenced him greatly, and he developed a belief that the Holocaust should be taught in high school. He is continually giving speeches about this topic, including one at Loyola Law School. Yes, you have an idea for a story, but how are you going to make that into a movie? And what are you going to do if it doesn't make money? To help answer these questions, here are some helpful steps to take.First of all, don't be afraid to hire professional screenwriters. While there are three people on this page who wrote their own screenplays, the majority of screenplays will be written by professionals such as writers and directors. That is because most scripts will be sent out to many different people throughout the Hollywood industry before they finally make it on-screen at a theater near you. DON'T get discouraged if somebody says no to your script. They may be saying no for a variety of reasons, and you would be surprised how many screenwriters have had a film that they wrote end up as a major success. Remember, it took 2 years for Schindler's List to make it into theaters, and there were plenty of people who said no along the way.
